Martha Layne Collins

Martha Layne Collins

Governor, Kentucky

Governor Collins established the task force that created the Governor’s Cup competition with an aim to mirror the state’s athletic competitions.  “We want to make academic achievement the ‘in’ thing,” stated Collins when the program was announced in 1985 and Governor Collin’s willingness to attach her imprimatur to the event was instrumental in helping KAAC market Governor’s Cup in the early years and, even more importantly, gives students a sense of participating in something prestigious.

J Bennett

John Bennett

Executive Director, KAAC

Through a career of over 30 years, John Bennett has firmly established himself as “Mr. KAAC.”  Although Mr. Bennett was not the first Executive Director, he arguably is the most impactful one.  Throughout his tenure, Mr. Bennett strove to expand the organization by adding new affiliate members and new events.  Needless to say, what we know of KAAC and Governor’s Cup today can be attributed to John Bennett.

K Hume KAAC

Katherine Hume

Executive Director, KAAC; Executive Director, FPSPI; 2000 HoF inductee

How difficult it must have been to break through the educational culture and bring acceptance to a new organization (and workload for educators), but Kathi pulled it off.  Her steadfast advocacy for Future Problem Solving came at a time when its perpetual inclusion in Governor’s Cup was not a foregone conclusion.  Ms. Hume not only was the first Executive Director of KAAC, but she also filled the position of Executive Director of the Future Problem Solving Program International.

Woolley

John Woolley

Apollo High School; 1998 HoF inductee

In addition to the “stellar involvement on all levels,” Mr. Wooley served a critical role in developing academic programs in Western Kentucky.  Early on, Governor’s Cup was dominated by Central and Eastern Kentucky, and there was a real danger of our event not being embraced statewide.  John’s tireless promotion and advocacy in Western Kentucky gave the Commonwealth the balance it enjoys today.

Chuck Dean

Paul Laurence Dunbar High School; 2002 HoF inductee

Through Mr. Dean’s leadership, P. L. Dunbar was built into the powerhouse that it is today.  One of the best Quick Recall coaches in Governor’s Cup history, Mr. Dean always had his teams ready to play anyone, anywhere.  After retirement, Mr. Dean continued being involved in Academic Teams and Governor’s Cup competitions, serving as both consultant and official and served to mentor other coaches.  For several years, up to the COVID pandemic, Mr. Dean moderated at State Finals, always exhibiting a flair for showmanship with his spot-on pronunciations of foreign words and scientific terminology.

Pam and Brenda Legacy

Pam Burton

Johnson County Middle School; FPS State Trainer; 2008 HoF inductee

At a time when the showcase competition in Governor’s Cup was at the high school level, Ms. Burton developed a powerhouse Johnson County Middle School program that left the rest of the state’s middle school coaches with a choice: up your game or get left behind.  Ms. Burton’s program’s domination also belied the idea that schools from disadvantaged areas couldn’t compete at the state level.  With 15 Middle School Governor’s Cup Championships, Pam Burton is the winningest coach at the state level in Governor’s Cup history.

Brenda Porter

Johnson Central High School; FPS State Trainer; Quick Recall State Trainer; International Community Problem Solving Coordinator; KAAC BoD; 1997 HoF inductee

Ms. Porter has coached since the inception of KAAC and she has introduced and competed in numerous Governor’s Cup and related events.  Beginning her many successes at Paintsville High School, Ms. Porter transferred to Johnson Central High School, vitalizing a failing program.  Under Ms. Porter’s leadership, the JCHS program became one of the most successful academic programs in the state, including winning the 2019 Championship.  Impressively, Ms. Porter’s FPS teams have won a total of 8 International Championships.  In terms of KAAC, Ms. Porter has done it all: she is a State Trainer in both FPS and Quick Recall, she is a question writer and a developer of study and practice materials, and she has served on the KAAC Board of Directors.  Members of her team have gone on to contribute to the success of academic competition across the state as trainers, coaches, and leaders in the field of academics.

F Baldridge Picture

Frank Baldridge

Sheldon Clark High School; 1997 HoF inductee

In addition to the "stellar involvement on all levels,” Mr. Baldridge should be included for his constant advocacy for Governor's Cup competition.  His strong voice for rural and smaller schools during KAAC's growth period kept our rules and requirements from unfairly favoring schools with socioeconomic and demographic advantages. This has had an exponential legacy effect in terms of membership in disadvantaged areas.

Mary Ann Miller

Mary Ann Miller

KDE; KAAC BoD; 2022 HoF inductee

In addition to being a steadfast Board member/volunteer, Ms. Miller’s influence in the Dept. of Education helped secure a $25,000 federal grant and renew it through multiple administrations. There's no way we would have grown as we did if we had been subsumed by the bureaucracies of the state Dept. of Education or athletic association, and Ms. Miller helped enable us to remain an independent organization.

B Darnell

Brenda Darnell

Program Director, KAAC, FPSPI Affiliate Director, Russell HS, State FPS Trainer

Ms. Darnell worked at every level of FPS--parent, coach, evaluator, trainer, and eventual Program Director.  FPS was and still is a passion of Ms. Darnell and through her efforts Kentucky has become the premier affiliate throughout the world.
