2026-2027 District Topic: Extreme Weather
Topic Descriptor:
Extreme weather events such as hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, droughts, blizzards, heatwaves, and wildfires, and are often characterized by their intensity, unpredictability, and the scale of damage they inflict on communities, infrastructure, and the natural environment. These events have grown more frequent and severe, causing widespread economic damage, displacing communities, and accelerating environmental destruction, while disproportionately affecting the most vulnerable populations. Aging infrastructure and overwhelmed emergency systems struggle to keep pace with the growing intensity of these events. Looking ahead, promising solutions include early warning systems, reforestation and wetland restoration as natural buffers, and modern advancements in climate resiliency. However, lasting progress will ultimately depend on planning and community-level adaptation.
