Regional All Stars

TIMELINE

  • Region Mentors will reach out to coaches on February 23rd to solicit student nominees for the All-Star teams.
  • Coaches will have until February 27th to submit names.
  • Mentors will then send a ballot to all coaches to vote on All-Star members that must be returned by March 6th.
  • Students chosen for their regional team will be contacted by KAAC with final details about the event.

2026 Tournament Matches

New for 2026 each of the 16 High School regions will submit an All-Star quick recall team, coordinated with the KAAC HS Regional Mentor.

  • Each team will consist of 5 players, decided upon by the regional coaches.
    • No more than 2 players from the same high school can be on the All-Star team.
    • All 5 players will play at some point in each match.
  • The regional coaches will also choose a coach and two honorable mention players for the team.
    • The honorable mention players serve as alternates only if one of the 5 players is unable to attend the event for any reason.

Competition

These 16 teams will come to Lexington and compete in a swiss pair morning session for seeding, followed by a single elimination afternoon bracket.

Awards (provided by KAAC)

  • The 5 students on the State Champion Team each receive a $300 scholarship.
  • The 5 students on the State Runner-Up Team each receive a $200 scholarship.
  • The 5 students on the State Third Place team each receive a $100 scholarship.
    • There will not be any trophies or medals awarded for this event.

Formats

Morning Matches

The swiss pair morning would be toss-up questions only, no bonuses.  Consiting of 60 questions per round.

At the end of the 4 morning rounds the card the team has will be their seed for the afternoon.

Afternoon Matches

The afternoon bracket matches would be split into 4 segments as follows:

A. Toss-Up Round

  • Consisting of 40 toss-up questions.
  • All questions are worth 5 points; no penalty for incorrect answers.

B. Worksheet Round

  • 10 questions (two from each subject area).
  • Teams will have 4 minutes to complete.
  • Answers would be reviewed and graded against the key.
  • 10 points each, the score will be added to your team's total.

C. Bonus Round

  • Consisting of 20 questions, the captain answers for the team.
  • All questions are worth 5 points; no penalty for incorrect answers; however, the other team has a chance to steal (bounce back).
  • The trailing team is asked question 1 and then play alternates between the two teams. [So, the team trailing at the beginning of the round gets first shot at all odd-numbered questions and the other team gets first shot at all even-numbered questions.]

D. Lightning Round

  • Consisting of 20 rapid-fire toss-up questions around a theme.
  • All correct answers are worth 10 points; incorrect answers are penalized -5 points.
